Diving into a Bizarre Steam Game Trial: Controlling a Turdy Character with the Goal to Find the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and players have encountered numerous interesting creations from small studios. But, one stands out for its offbeat concept. Titled Unko Technica, this old-school styled platformer lets you play a character that is actually a turd attempting to make its way to a commode. As a fun fact, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
How you interact is easy to grasp: you only need a single jump button. Across 150 stages, battle boss fights and access a shop to purchase outfits for your fecal avatar.
Time your jumps precisely, as a wrong move means restarting the level. Bounce on air pockets to launch the poop higher, navigate disappearing ledges, and touch triggers to reveal hidden paths. Gather UN-KOINS for buying tougher stages in which things gets crazy.
Graphically, the demo shows off neon environments and an amazing soundtrack. The retro visual style of moving geometric shapes evokes memories of players of beloved games like Earthbound.
Even though hard to recall similar titles where you play as a piece of feces, interactive entertainment have long featured scatological themes. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, you can create throwables from protagonist excrement. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use dung as plant food. Unsurprisingly, this theme is present a lot in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Despite its goofy concept, Unko Technica has already received notable awards, like winning at Bandai Namco's indie contest in 2023. This trial version is accessible currently on Steam, with the complete version planned to arrive on PC on November 19.
